Dammit Janet I Love You

Jim, 72 and from Hull in Northern England, was a former soldier and truck driver when his wife of 30 years died. As the dust settled, Jim realised that this was the time to fulfil the dream of his entire life – to live as a woman. First he wore his wife’s clothes at home. Then the office. Finally, Jim came out as Janet and everything changed forever. I first met Janet on a night out in one of Hull’s oldest LBGTQ bars and we struck up an instant rapport. Janet is a T-girl in a very working class way – brash, outgoing and very straight to the point. I was bowled over by her candour and sense of humour. We began meeting up regularly to make photographs and the project became a collaboration lasting three years.

Poignant and intimate, powerful and confrontational, Dammit Janet I Love You defies gender norms and encourages us to see different dynamics of class and gender in Britain - Gender 50/50
